Coinbase Ventures

Shan Aggarwal.

Fund Size

Coinbase Ventures does not disclose a fund size. It has made more than 400 investments, most of them small strategic checks rather than lead rounds, which puts estimated total deployment in the range of several hundred million dollars.

Thesis

Strategic investing across the entire digital-asset ecosystem. Coinbase Ventures backs companies that expand the overall digital-asset market, the thesis being that anything that grows the ecosystem indirectly grows Coinbase's core exchange and custody business. They invest without requiring board seats or demanding portfolio companies use Coinbase.

Portfolio

OpenSea, Alchemy, FalconX, TaxBit, Bitso, CoinDCX, BlockFi, and Compound, among hundreds of others across DeFi, infrastructure, and developer tools.

Why It Matters

As the venture arm of the largest U.S. digital-asset exchange, Coinbase Ventures is one of the most active strategic investors in the space. Their investment decisions signal which sectors Coinbase sees as strategically important, making their portfolio a useful map of where the industry is heading.

Companies on this list they backed

BlockFi, FTX, Ledn, Terra / Luna
