Galaxy Digital
Galaxy Digital is a Bitcoin company in the Asset Management category, founded in 2018 by Mike Novogratz.

The Idea
A full-service digital asset merchant bank modeled on Goldman Sachs/Blackstone but focused entirely on digital assets. After retiring from Fortress in 2015, Novogratz raised $250M to launch Galaxy in 2018 via reverse merger on Toronto's TSX.
Early Traction
Novogratz's Goldman pedigree and ambition to build 'Blackstone for crypto' captured the institutional capital zeitgeist of 2018. He seeded the firm with roughly $300M of his own money on top of the $250M raise, stood up an OTC trading desk for institutions and a $325M EOS.io ecosystem fund with Block.one, and took Galaxy public via a reverse merger on Toronto's TSX Venture Exchange, one of the first publicly traded digital asset merchant banks.
Peak Stats
Public company (TSX: GLXY). $4B+ AUM. Portfolio spans venture, mining, trading, asset management, and strategic investments.
Status Today
Active. One of the few 'full-service' digital asset finance firms. The $400M BlockFi investment (Sept 2021) and subsequent bankruptcy exposure damaged the firm but it remains operationally sound.
Why It Matters
Galaxy Digital became the model for how traditional finance power players would enter digital assets. Novogratz proved that a digital asset company could be legitimately public, professionally managed, and diversified across multiple digital asset business lines.
